You finish eating. And suddenly you feel sleepy. Heavy. Bloated. Sluggish. Mentally dull. Most people ignore it. Ayurveda doesn’t. In Ayurveda, these are often early signs that Agni — your digestive strength — is becoming disturbed. Ayurveda also describes something called Ama. Ama can be understood as poorly digested residue that the body struggles to process properly. Over time, this may contribute to heaviness, inflammation, sluggishness, and disease patterns. Imagine trying to burn wet firewood. The fire smokes. Nothing burns properly. Residue builds up. Something similar can happen inside the body when digestion weakens. The interesting part is this: Ayurveda does not blame only food. It also looks at how you eat. Ever eaten while scrolling your phone? Watching television? Answering emails? Driving? Rushing between meetings? Your stomach notices. Stress changes digestion dramatically. Even healthy food may not digest properly when the nervous system is tense or distracted. This is why Ayurveda encourages surprisingly simple habits. Eat freshly prepared food when possible. Eat at regular times. Slow down while eating. Chew properly. Avoid overeating. Sleep adequately. Move your body daily. Give your digestion a calm environment to work in. Simple? Yes. Powerful? Very often. Today, many people search for stronger supplements, extreme diets, or complicated health hacks. But Ayurveda often begins somewhere much simpler: “Let us first improve digestion.” Because when digestion improves, the body often starts healing more efficiently on its own.
