Dr Anjana BAMS CHRONIC SINUSITIS SINCE CHILDHOOD: AN INTEGRATIVE AYURVEDIC APPROACH TO LONGSTANDING NASAL CONGESTION AND HEADACHE Chronic sinusitis is a condition that can significantly affect quality of life, especially when symptoms begin in childhood and continue into adulthood. A 51-year-old female patient presented with a long history of recurrent nasal congestion, sinus headaches, heaviness of the head, and periodic breathing discomfort. Such chronic symptoms often interfere with sleep, concentration, and daily activities, leading to both physical and emotional fatigue.
From a modern medical perspective, chronic sinusitis refers to persistent inflammation of the sinuses lasting more than 12 weeks. Common symptoms include nasal blockage, facial pressure, postnasal drip, headache, reduced sense of smell, and recurrent infections. Longstanding sinusitis may also be associated with allergies, structural abnormalities, or chronic inflammatory conditions. In this case, an Ayurvedic treatment plan was initiated with a combination of internal medicines and external therapies aimed at reducing inflammation, improving sinus drainage, and restoring respiratory balance. The internal medicines prescribed included formulations such as Amrutha Shadangam Kashayam, Swasanandam Gulika, Dhanwantharam Gulika, Pravala Bhasma, Gorochanadi Gulika, and Mukkamukkadukadi Gulika. These medicines are traditionally used in Ayurveda to manage chronic respiratory disorders, sinus inflammation, recurrent congestion, and headaches. Their therapeutic goals include reducing Kapha accumulation, supporting respiratory function, improving digestion and immunity, and relieving chronic inflammatory symptoms. Alongside oral medications, several external Ayurvedic therapies were advised. Steam inhalation twice daily was recommended to loosen mucus secretions and improve sinus drainage. Shiro lepa using Rasnadi Choornam was applied over the scalp and forehead to help reduce headache, heaviness, and congestion. Pratimarsha nasyam, a gentle nasal administration of medicated oil, was included to lubricate the nasal passages and support healthy sinus function. Additional therapies such as kashaya dhara and herbal fomentation were also administered. These treatments aim to calm inflammation, promote circulation, relieve facial pressure, and reduce chronic congestion. Kashaya vasthi, a medicated herbal decoction enema therapy, is considered an important Ayurvedic treatment for balancing Vata dosha and managing chronic inflammatory conditions. It is traditionally believed to help detoxification, improve systemic balance, and support long-term relief in chronic disorders affecting the head and respiratory system. Together, these therapies work holistically to address both the symptoms and the underlying imbalance contributing to chronic sinusitis. Lifestyle measures also play an important role in long-term management. Avoiding exposure to dust, smoke, cold air, and allergens can help reduce recurrent flare-ups. Warm water intake, steam inhalation, and adequate sleep are beneficial supportive practices. In chronic cases persisting since childhood, evaluation by an ENT specialist and imaging studies such as CT scan of the sinuses may also be useful to identify structural causes like deviated septum or nasal polyps. An integrative approach combining Ayurvedic management, lifestyle correction, and appropriate medical evaluation can provide meaningful relief for patients suffering from chronic sinusitis and recurrent headaches over many years.
