Why We Focus on the Gut
​Western medicine views Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as a neurodevelopmental condition, working primarily on cognitive brain functions through psychologically derived therapies.
Ayurveda understands it differently: as gut-toxicity masking brain functions. This toxicity affects how a child grows, learns, communicates, and responds to the world.
Our Gut-Renewal Protocol addresses the digestive system in a targeted, structured way. By stopping the generation of these toxins and preventing their transport to the brain, we create the physical foundation for the child’s natural development to resume.

why the difference in ayurveda
Ayurveda looks at your child holistically. We follow the chain of causes and remove them. Here is an example. Say you are cold and wet. Would you resort to pills, counselling and surgery or just get out of the rain, dry yourself and stay in a warm room? Say your garden plants are suddenly come up with yellow leaves. Would you paint them green or change the soil and add a suitable fertiliser? 
Ayurveda follows the same logic. If there is a cognitive issue, there must be something in the brain. If there is something in the brain, it must be coming from the gut as gut is the only/main nutrient supplier. If it is there in the gut, we have time-tested herbs, nutrition and therapies to resolve it. 

How Our Medicines Are Different
We offer what we believe is currently the most effective Ayurvedic approach for early-years autism. We achieve this by rejecting standard industry shortcuts.
We do not use preservatives. Most hospitals dispense regular Ayurveda products filled with preservatives, which stress a child’s delicate gut. We use only fresh preparations.
We do not use standard water extracts. Water extracts are bitter, resulting in low palatability and daily struggles. We don't use them. Our child-friendly preparations are formulated so your child will actually take them. We do not use regulation recipes. Standard hospital recipes are built for adult physiologies. We do not use them. Our targeted herbs and formulas are adapted specifically for young children to ensure faster, lasting results.

what does ayurveda do differently?
While other work with the brain and behaviour, Ayurveda emphasis on the cause and process. We work with your child's gut functions using selected nutrition and herbs. We rest and support gut with a daily routine. Nutrient-dense meals nourish the brain, and routine repairs their gut. 
Parents are coached to make sure the child is supported throughout the program gently but strictly as we want to get better sooner.  We provide them with verbal training, booklets and weekly telephone calls. Ayurveda's 11,000-year-old principles and practices are still being proved. One of them in the Gut-Tissue connection, which is in this case gut-brain connection. 

The Programme: What to Expect
The Vaidyagrama Autism Care (VAC) programme is an clinician-led, comprehensive, and easy program. Families follow this well-organised support for 9–12 months, followed by a home-based maintenance routine.
​Monthly In-Person Consultations Care is delivered face-to-face at Vaidyagrama, Coimbatore. We do not do online consultations for this programme. Unhurried, in-person care ensures accurate diagnosis.
We provide: Part 1: Screening and assessment. Part 2: Diagnosis and prescription. Part 3: Ongoing support. Monthly Herbal Supplements You will receive child-friendly Ayurvedic preparations, supplied in easy-to-handle monthly packets. A Daily Lifestyle Record You will receive a take-home lifestyle book with daily record pages (including a simple morning-to-evening checklist and meal-planning cards). You bring this back each month so our team can review progress and refine the plan. Weekly Telephone & Email Support Short, scheduled calls help with questions and minor adjustments at home, reducing parental stress. Our team responds to all email queries within 1–2 days.

Research

Global research emphasises that autism is highly heterogeneous, with strong genetic influences and multiple environmental factors. There is currently no single known cause and no universal cure. However, early and consistent intervention can meaningfully improve long-term outcomes for many children. 
Evidence for gut-focused approaches is promising in subgroups — particularly in children with significant gastrointestinal symptoms — but remains an evolving field and results differ between individuals. VAC therefore:
  • Does not claim to cure autism.
  • Focuses on supporting gut health, behaviour and family routines within an evidence-respecting framework.
  • Encourages families to continue standard developmental therapies (such as speech and occupational therapy) and paediatric follow-up as advised.
Parents are encouraged to discuss any new programme with their child’s healthcare providers and to avoid stopping existing, evidence-based therapies without medical guidance.

Is this programme safe alongside existing medication?
Yes. The VAC protocol is safe to follow alongside existing medication. Our senior doctors review each child’s full medical history at intake and at every follow-up consultation, so the plan is always tailored to what your child is already receiving.

My child is already over 6. Can they still join?
VAC is currently designed and clinically structured for children under 6, as this is when gut-renewal protocols show the most consistent progress. If your child is older, please share their details through our contact page and our team will advise you on the most appropriate next steps.

Is there a diet you recommend?
Yes. Your child's body needs lots of energy to recover from any disease or condition. So, their shopping list will have a lot of nutrient-dense food items. That means plenty of phytonutrients and some complex carbohydrates, among other things. As mentioned above, the plan is built around what supports gut renewal, not around restriction for its own sake.

Do you offer online consultations?
All VAC consultations are face-to-face at Vaidyagrama. This is central to the clinical process — our doctors need to observe, assess and guide in person. We do not offer remote or online consultations for this programme.

Is this programme sustainable?
With proper parental education and support, yes. Our team invests significant time in helping families build daily routines that are realistic and maintainable at home.

Why does this cost what it does?
Conventional therapies in India often cost ₹5 lakhs per year. Our programme costs less than 20%. Our doctors go through rigorous weekly training covering emerging information on herbs, nutrition, gut chemistry and supportive therapies, so they can support each child with genuine clinical confidence.

Same or similar conditions - neurodevelopmental conditions that can resemble Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), overlap with it, or commonly occur alongside it, the main ones are:
  1. ADHD — Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by persistent difficulties with attention, impulse control and/or activity regulation that are inappropriate for the person's developmental level. It commonly begins in childhood and can affect learning, relationships, organisation and everyday functioning. ADHD and ASD can coexist, and some features may overlap.
  2. Angelman Syndrome: Angelman syndrome is a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder caused by abnormalities involving the UBE3A gene, usually on chromosome 15. It is associated with developmental delay, intellectual disability, speech impairment, movement and balance difficulties, and a characteristic behavioural profile. Seizures are also common.
  3. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition involving persistent differences in social communication and interaction together with restricted, repetitive or unusually focused patterns of behaviour or interests. It is a spectrum, meaning that presentation and support needs vary considerably between individuals. Characteristics generally emerge during early development.
  4. Developmental Coordination Disorder: Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), also known as developmental dyspraxia, is a neurodevelopmental disorder in which the acquisition and execution of coordinated motor skills are substantially below what would be expected for age. It can interfere with activities of daily living, education, play and participation. It may occur alongside ADHD, ASD or learning disorders.
  5. Developmental Language Disorder: Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a persistent difficulty with understanding and/or using spoken language that is not primarily explained by hearing loss, neurological disease, intellectual disability or another known biomedical condition. It can affect vocabulary, grammar, sentence formation and communication. DLD can substantially influence educational and social development.
  6. Epilepsy: Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterised by a tendency to have recurrent unprovoked seizures. It can occur independently or in association with genetic, developmental, structural or metabolic conditions. Epilepsy is relatively common among people with certain neurodevelopmental disorders, including some forms of ASD.
  7. Fragile X Syndrome: Fragile X syndrome is a genetic condition caused by changes in the FMR1 gene on the X chromosome. It is one of the most common inherited causes of intellectual disability and can be associated with developmental delay, learning difficulties, behavioural differences and autistic features. Its presentation varies considerably between individuals.
  8. Genetic Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Genetic neurodevelopmental disorders are a broad group of conditions caused by genetic variants or chromosomal abnormalities that affect the development and functioning of the brain and nervous system. They may affect cognition, communication, behaviour, movement and learning. Several genetic syndromes can include features resembling or accompanying ASD.
  9. Landau–Kleffner Syndrome: Landau–Kleffner syndrome is a rare childhood neurological disorder involving acquired difficulties with understanding and producing language, frequently associated with abnormal electrical activity in the brain and seizures. Development may initially appear typical before language abilities deteriorate. It requires neurological and developmental assessment.
  10. Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder: Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder characterised by recurrent intrusive thoughts, images or urges and/or repetitive behaviours or mental acts performed in response to them. The obsessions and compulsions can consume significant time and cause distress or functional impairment. OCD can sometimes overlap phenomenologically with repetitive behaviours seen in ASD.
  11. Prader–Willi Syndrome: Prader–Willi syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by abnormal expression of genes in a specific region of chromosome 15. It affects multiple aspects of development and physiology and can involve intellectual or learning difficulties, behavioural and emotional problems, distinctive eating-related difficulties and characteristic physical features.
  12. Reactive Attachment Disorder: Reactive Attachment Disorder is a childhood disorder associated with severely disturbed patterns of attachment and social interaction, generally developing in the context of extreme insufficient care or neglect. Children may show markedly reduced willingness to seek or respond to comfort from caregivers. It differs from ASD in its developmental mechanism and clinical pattern.
  13. Rett Syndrome: Rett syndrome is a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder, predominantly affecting females, most often associated with pathogenic variants in the MECP2 gene. Children may initially develop relatively typically and subsequently experience loss of previously acquired skills, particularly communication and purposeful hand use, together with neurological and motor abnormalities.
  14. Selective Mutism: Selective Mutism is an anxiety-related childhood disorder in which a child consistently fails to speak in particular social situations despite speaking in other settings where they feel comfortable. It can interfere with education and social participation. It is distinct from a fundamental inability to develop spoken language.
  15. Social Anxiety Disorder: Social Anxiety Disorder is a psychiatric condition involving marked and persistent fear or anxiety about social or performance situations in which a person may be observed or evaluated by others. The resulting avoidance or distress can significantly interfere with education, relationships and daily life. It can sometimes resemble aspects of social difficulty seen in ASD.
  16. Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder: Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder is a communication disorder involving persistent difficulties using verbal and nonverbal communication appropriately in social contexts. Individuals may have difficulty adapting communication to different situations, following conversational conventions or understanding implicit aspects of communication. Unlike ASD, restricted and repetitive behaviours are not a defining feature.
  17. Specific Learning Disorder: Specific Learning Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder involving persistent difficulties acquiring and using particular academic skills despite appropriate educational opportunities. It may primarily affect reading, written expression or mathematics. It can coexist with ADHD, ASD, language disorders and other neurodevelopmental conditions.
  18. Tuberous Sclerosis Complex: Tuberous Sclerosis Complex is a genetic disorder caused by pathogenic variants affecting the TSC1 or TSC2 genes, resulting in the growth of benign tumours in multiple organs, including the brain. Neurological manifestations can include epilepsy, developmental difficulties, intellectual disability and behavioural or psychiatric conditions. ASD is also more common in people with TSC.
  19. Williams Syndrome: Williams syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by a microdeletion on chromosome 7. It is associated with a characteristic developmental and cognitive profile, cardiovascular abnormalities and distinctive social and behavioural characteristics. Speech, learning and developmental patterns can differ substantially from those seen in the general population.
